Shinichi Sawada is a Japanese ceramicist who has nonspeaking autism. He began his creative journey in 2000 with Nakayoshi Fukushikai, a social welfare organization that works to support and foster independence in neurodivergent individuals.
Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay is Sawada’s first solo exhibition in the United States, co-presented by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC. It showcases a selection of works made between 2004–2021.
The exhibition is accompanied by the publication, Shinichi Sawada: Agents of Clay. My photo is used to illustrate a scholarly essay on haniwa statues that helps situate the artist’s work.
